Urobilinuria and Its Importance in Malaria

In four cases of typhoid fever where the Widal test was positive, the urine was negative for urobilin, and in two cases of Malta fever where the agglutination test was positive, the urine was found free from urobilin. Out of 1,124 blood films examined malignant tertian malaria parasites were found in 137, benign tertian malaria parasites in 47, and quartan malaria parasites in one, thus showing the relative preponderance of malignant tertian infection and the extreme rarity of quartan. In 40 cases where no malaria parasites were found but where the urine was strongly positive for urobilin, the medical officers were advised to give quinine in curative doses for the fever and in all such cases the fever yielded to the drug.
